After completing the build of your boat here at Van Dam we will instruct you, the owner, on the best way to maintain your boat. Like everything we value in life, your custom Van Dam requires love and attention to maximize its potential.
While every boat will have its own unique maintenance list, there are some things that are common to all. For every boat we build we recommend the following:
- Every boat should have the bilges drained and sponged dried each fall. Floor boards should be left open so any water left can evaporate. This prevent mildew and mold from forming in your boat.
- During out bilges is even more important in northern climates. Water freezes and, no matter what material the boat is made of, the freeze/thaw cycles are destructive. Over time water will get into cracks and crevices and when it freezes it expands and pushes things apart.
- Inspect the exterior of the boat from top to bottom at a minimum of once every year while the boat is out of the water. Look for damage to the exterior and/or failure of the finish. If there is damage it should be repaired to match the location it is at. Failure of the finish is most typical in clear finish, but can be in painted areas as well. Look for the finish starting to go dull or lose its shine. This means the finish is starting to approach failure. For clear finishes the next step toward failure will be crazing in the finish. When that happens failure is imminent and fresh top coats should be applied soon.
