Star heading to North Channel

A Naval Architect’s Personal Boat

STAR was custom built in 1981 for naval architect Frederick S. Ford as his personal yacht. Preferring a wooden boat built with modern techniques, he went to Steve Van Dam, whose ingenuity and attention to detail was becoming well-known. STAR was built using modern construction methods, such as all glued construction and a laminated hull; thus assuring extraordinary strength and rigidity, qualities that have endured through the years.

As in every custom boat built by Van Dam, the skilled craftsmen hand selected the wood used in STAR for both its beauty and its strength. A luxurious interior using soft, rounded shapes and warm colors has created a rich and homey atmosphere. The exquisite joinery details, both inside and out, are a testimony to Van Dam’s craftsmanship. Van Dam has had the privilege to maintain this boat since it was built, and it is still in like-new condition.
